Designed for employee interaction and cohesion, our head office in Centurion – the conneXXion – is the first building in South Africa to achieve Silver Level WELL certification for Core and Shell by the International WELL Building Institute.
It is the first global rating system that focuses on how buildings are designed to improve occupant and visitor comfort, drive better choices and enhance health and wellness. Receiving the WELL certification attests to our commitment to support our employees with a safe, conducive and collaborative workplace.
Our conneXXion building also received a 6-Star Green Star rating from the Green Building Council of South Africa (GBCSA) for its innovative, environmentally friendly design, construction and operations.
By working in an environment that enhances the health and well-being of our employees while minimising our environmental footprint, we hope to create a sustainable company for decades to come.
There are eight different work settings for typical day activities to ensure a balance between collaboration and individual work environments.
We strive to create a learning culture for our employees, and ensure compliance with safety, health and environment requirements, using the e-learning platform as well as classroom-based training. In 2021, employees completed more than 80 303 training interventions on the MyNexxt e-learning platform. In addition, leadership and management, soft skills, occupational programmes, and technical training was provided by either formal academic institutions, service providers and/or our Grootegeluk and Matla training centres (accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations).
Exxaro’s resilience lies in our ability to equip young people with the tools and skills needed to work efficiently in an environment moving quickly towards the Fourth Industrial Revolution. Every year, we select talented community members to study at formal tertiary institutions, preparing them for successful careers in our industry and grooming them as tomorrow’s leaders.
These graduates will receive formal training and assigned mentors will oversee their development programmes. In 2021, we supported 28 full-time bursars at South African universities at a cost of R2.4 million. 100% of our bursars were black South Africans and 54% were black women.
Our position statement in support of our diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) strategy is 'One Exxaro for all', which is the driving force behind everything we do to empower all employees, regardless of gender, race, or culture. We are proud to have a myriad of talented individuals working at Exxaro who come from diverse backgrounds and offer fresh perspectives. To harness our varied talent and thinking, we run events and initiatives that promote an all-inclusive, open, and connected culture.
Developing the skills of our workforce is the cornerstone of successfully implementing our employment equity strategy – progress and transformation have been two of our top priorities for over a decade. Without them, we would be unable to meet our transformation objectives or do our part in driving the national obligation towards a non-racial and transformed society.
To enable continuous diversity, we consult our employees and unions to structure detailed plans of affirmative-action measures for each business unit, focusing on attracting, developing, and retaining people from historically disadvantaged backgrounds.
We believe that Belonging Powers Possibility. Recently, we redefined our DE&I strategy to cultivate an inclusive culture that powers the full possibilities of:

In doing so, we have achieved our employment equity targets for the past five years and continue to show progress in achieving our goals. However, key challenges still exist and need to be addressed. To assist and continue on the positive trajectory, our targets for 2019 to 2022 have been set and are in line with the Department of Mineral Resources’ 2018 Mining Charter III.
