Three Exxaro Resources Business Units walked away with six safety awards at the 2023 COALSAFE Awards.
Hosted by the South African Colliery Managers' Association (SACMA), the COALSAFE Awards recognise the efforts of the coal mining industry in upholding safety standards with specific reference to people, environment, and the communities in which the companies operate.
In the safety category Matla Mine 1 was awarded for achieving 18 000 Fatality Free Production Shifts and Matla Mine 3 received an award for achieving 10 000 Fatality Free Production Shifts. Leeuwpan Mine received one award for 0.00 Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate and another award for achieving 30 200 Fatality Free Production Shifts. Grootegeluk received an outstanding award for the most improved Dust Milestone and the Grootegeluk Plant division was recognised for achieving 15 094 Fatality Free Production Shifts.
Mongezi Veti, Executive Head; Sustainability expressed his pride in the groups achievements and said “As a responsible mining organisation, we continuously look for innovative ways to enhance our safety performance throughout our business. It is evident that our current initiatives are successful, and these results have made us proud. Our achievements inspire us to remain committed to safe production, allowing us to always return home to our families.”
This year’s awards were hosted under the theme Responsible Coal Mining Stewards, which promoted purposeful and responsible mining through the collaboration of different mining houses across the sector, creating an environment which improves the lives of the mining communities and adds value to all stakeholders.
