The first 19 white rhinos have been successfully translocated from South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique through the longest road-transfer of rhinos ever done. This landmark and pioneering rewilding initiative, the first in a series of white and black rhino translocations still to follow, is the result of a partnership between Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), Peace Parks Foundation and Exxaro Resources, in support of and in collaboration with the Governments of Mozambique and South Africa. Scientists have asserted that the rise in temperatures due to global warming carries risks of increased flooding, wild fires, extreme weather, and destruction of natural species. Faced with these impending catastrophes, signatories of COP26 have pledged carbon neutrality by 2050 to reduce global temperatures to 1.5 degrees. As a signatory of COP26, South Africa created the Presidential Climate Commission to foster a pathway for a net-zero, climate resilient economy by 2050. On 18 February 2022, the government introduced the Climate Change Bill to enable effective climate change response and a long-term, Just Energy Transition to a low-carbon economy and society for South Africa.

To help sustain the resettled community of Phumulani Agri Village in rural Mpumalanga, Exxaro Resources’ Belfast mine initiated an organic food garden project, which aims to empower the community with Agri-skills development, maintaining social capital, and creating avenues for income generation. The primary objective of the project includes creating sustainable decent small scale agriculture related jobs. The project will receive funding of more than R1.6-million from Exxaro’s Belfast digital and connected mine. Tsitsikamma Wind Farm Trust (TWFT) hosted a ceremony on 20 April 2022 to hand over five key projects to the AmaMfengu community on behalf of the Tsitsikamma Community Wind Farm (TCWF) in Tsitsikamma, Eastern Cape as part of their drive to empower the local community. Cennergi (Pty) Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Exxaro Resources, is the majority (75%) shareholder within the TCWF.
