Seven critically endangered black rhino have been safely translocated from Manketti Game Reserve in South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique. This follows the successful reintroduction of 19 white rhino to the park just two months earlier. The white rhinos have adjusted to their new home with ease and, remarkably, a new calf was born into the herd soon after their arrival. The same is hoped for the newly arrived black rhino brought there as part of a pioneering conservation project committed to restoring, securing, and expanding populations of both species. The first 19 white rhinos have been successfully translocated from South Africa to Zinave National Park in Mozambique through the longest road-transfer of rhinos ever done. This landmark and pioneering rewilding initiative, the first in a series of white and black rhino translocations still to follow, is the result of a partnership between Mozambique’s National Administration for Conservation Areas (ANAC), Peace Parks Foundation and Exxaro Resources, in support of and in collaboration with the Governments of Mozambique and South Africa. Scientists have asserted that the rise in temperatures due to global warming carries risks of increased flooding, wild fires, extreme weather, and destruction of natural species. Faced with these impending catastrophes, signatories of COP26 have pledged carbon neutrality by 2050 to reduce global temperatures to 1.5 degrees. As a signatory of COP26, South Africa created the Presidential Climate Commission to foster a pathway for a net-zero, climate resilient economy by 2050.
